Rev. William Harry Worner

Father Bill Worner was born in San Francisco on September 21, 1920 to Harry C. and Nellie Flynn Worner; he was educated at Saint Monica’s School, Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and Saint Joseph’s College in Mountain View. He entered Saint Patrick’s Seminary in 1940 and was ordained June 16, 1945. He served at St. Michael’s Church and St. Kevin’s Church in San Francisco; St. John the Baptist Church in El Cerrito; Corpus Cristi Church in Piedmont; St. Bartholomew’s Church in San Mateo; and St. Teresa Church in San Francisco.

In 1964, Archbishop Joseph T. McGucken assigned Father Worner to residence at Saint Joseph’s Church in Cupertino, with the responsibility of establishing the Church of the Ascension in Saratoga. Father Worner, the first pastor of the parish, began offering Mass on the new altar in June, 1967.

In 1977, after 13 years at Ascension, Father Worner was assigned to become the pastor of Saint Gregory’s Church in San Mateo. Following fourteen years of ministry at Saint Gregory’s, Father Worner was appointed Director of the Office of Development, at Serra Retirement Center (later renamed Serra Clergy House). Father Worner retired from active ministry on March 1, 1994, but accepted Archbishop Quinn’s request at that time that he serve as co-Director with Father Pat Keane of the Archdiocesan program for Retired Priests. In 1995, he was appointed Director of Serra Clergy House, and Representative for Retired Priests in San Mateo County, a responsibility he undertook faithfully until January, 2004. In recent years, Father had moved to Alma Via of San Francisco (2004), and to Alma Via of Union City (2008).
Father Worner was a proud Knight Commander of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, a long time Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, an avid golfer at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and a world traveler.

Father Worner was predeceased in April of 2009 by his brother, Albert C. Worner of San Francisco. He is survived by his sister in law, Evelyn Worner, his nephew Richard A. Worner and his nieces Susan Tierney, Judy Hurabiell and Nancy Fleck.

Friends are invited to visit after 5:00pm and are invited to attend the Vigil Service on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:00PM at St. Gregory Church, 28th Ave and Hacienda St., San Mateo and the Celebration of the Funeral Mass on Thursday, March 4th at 11:00 AM also at St. Gregory’s. A donation may be made in Father’s name to Serra Clergy House, 455 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403 or to the Priests’ Retirement Fund, Archdiocese of San Francisco, One Peter Yorke Way, San Francisco, CA 94109.
