Desmond Michael Grogan 84, long time resident of Miraloma Park, San Francisco, died Sunday July 18, 2010, after a long battle with lung cancer. Preceded in death by his first wife Marie Alice Grogan, in 1988 and his second wife Phyllis Howard Grogan, in 2007, Desmond was a proud retiree and former director of accounts receivable for the hospital at UCSF. Born Sept. 4, 1925 in Dublin, Ireland to Michael Joseph Grogan and Ellen Doyle Grogan, Desmond emigrated to Canada in the mid-1950s, then to the US where he became a naturalized citizen. He was a multi-talented and complex man with interests in literature, drama and art. He produced, directed and acted in many plays in Ireland, Canada and the US. He received awards from a number of drama festivals in Ireland and England and was involved in radio work in the US and Canada. He is survived by his son, Dr. Brian Grogan of Yuma Arizona; his daughter Deirdre Grogan of Santa Rosa; his sister Fionnuala Grogan Baerman and brother-in-law, Bill Baerman of Napa. His granddaughters Shavonne Lowney of Santa Rosa and Mari Fionnuala Grogan of Yuma Arizona also survive him. He will be missed by his family and many good friends in the US and Ireland, including Al and Debbie Naklowycz in San Francisco and Aoife, Siobhan and Colin Scully in Ireland. Thanks from the family to his caretakers Rosalia and Angelica who loving cared for him throughout his illness as though he were their own Lolo. You are in a better place, Desmond. And as the doors open may you hear, "Failte Romhat a Chara." Memorial services will be held on July 21, 2010 from 5 -7 p.m. at Duggan's Sera Mortuary, 650-756-4500. Donations can be made in Desmond's name to the American Lung Association.
